Developmental Disability Services
MHA began collaborating with the Department of Developmental Services(DDS) as part of the phase out of Belchertown State School. In 1990 MHA with HUD financing opened two community residences in Longmeadow - one for men and the other for women. Today, MHA offers both supported living and community residences models. DDS often seeks services from MHA when a secondary diagnosis is present, such as mental illness or substance abuse. The common goal through partnership with DDS and service participants and their families is to offer and facilitate genuine opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to engage fully and meaningfully in, and contribute to, their communities as valued members.
Community Residences - Supervision and structure are hallmarks at our sites. The type of support offered is often direct assistance and prompts for daily living skills, such as grooming, dressing and social activities. The promotion of wellness and attention to medical issues are central program components. The houses are permanent homes for the individuals and accordingly reflect their preferences and personalities. Individual service plans are developed to compliment strengths and speak to areas for growth.
Supported Living – This is a community outreach model that works with individuals who live independently. Assisting individuals to secure affordable, safe, and desirable housing is a priority. Outreach workers engage with participants in their homes and community settings. Support hours are typically during the day and early evening, focusing on activities of daily living. An afterhours, urgent response team is available to individuals in the supported housing models.
