MHA Programs
MHA is proud to be a major contributor to the development, evolution, and refinement of community based residential and support services for families and individuals experiencing mental impairments. During the last 45 years MHA has been and continues to be an innovator in community supports. Beginning with the closing of Northampton State Hospital, in 1960 MHA opened the first group home for women with mental illness in Springfield, MA. Since the creation of residential supports outside the large institutions MHA has been instrumental and a leader in developing programs and models responsive to individual wishes, desires and needs. MHA offers a multitude of housing options and support services to encourage the greatest level of independence in least restrictive settings. Our housing models and services range from very structured and supervised to independent living arrangements.
Our innovations include accessing federal funding to create a variety of housing alternatives from traditional “group homes” to specialty treatment focused sites, to apartments and condominiums. MHA has been extremely successful in obtaining federal grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide quality, affordable, and attractive housing options. For example, MHA was the first organization in the country to use HUD resources to develop condominium units for individuals with mental impairments. The utilization of HUD funding for the physical sites allows MHA to maximize the State and local revenues for services and staff support.
MHA provides residential and support services for numerous entities including but not limited to State, local, and private parties. Our vision is to offer expertise and experience to those in need of housing, skills and community connections to enhance their quality of life.
